SFC commits to research pools in strategic plan

The Scottish Funding Council has launched a consultation on its strategic plan for 2015-18, which makes a renewed commitment to Scotland’s structure of ‘research pools’.

The pools, which bring together different institutions to share resources, have been successful in leveraging funding from other sources since their inception in 2003 but their ongoing support has never been taken for granted. The strategy asserts that the pools “increase Scotland’s research competitiveness and achieve value for money”.

The strategy also says the SFC will prioritise investment in research on developing “world-leading and internationally excellent research” in an apparent reference to the Research Excellence Framework’s definition of three and four-star ranked research. The strategy also pledges to invest in digital infrastructure, including in the UK’s higher education ICT organisation Jisc.
