Scotland wants guarantees on fishery funding

Fergus Ewing, Scotland’s rural economy secretary, has urged the UK government to guarantee financial support for the Scottish fishing industry after Britain leaves the European Union.

The EU has allocated £81 million to Scotland’s fisheries and aquaculture industries, including infrastructure, and R&D, between 2014 and 2020. The funds amount to 46 per cent of the UK’s share of the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund.

Ewing called on the UK’s environment secretary Michael Gove to clarify whether this support would continue post-Brexit, adding that fishing and related industries clearly support local economies and jobs.
