Welsh society slams ‘damaging nonsense’ about rising research funding

The Learned Society of Wales has hit out at recent claims that the country is getting better at receiving funding from the UK research councils.

The society’s statement came just days after the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales published its annual report for 2012-13, which said that Welsh institutions have enjoyed a growth in research income in recent years. The report celebrated the fact that Welsh institutions attracted 4.8 per cent of the research councils’ total funding for the UK when Oxford, Cambridge and London institutions were excluded.

But with these institutions included, the Welsh share drops to 2 per cent. “This is not good news,” the society said.
