HEFCW urged to build Welsh research capacity

The annual letter from the Welsh Government setting out the remit of the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales has warned the council to address a shortage of researchers in the country.

The letter says that the government expects HEFCW to support the second phase of the Sêr Cymru (Welsh Stars) research programme, running to 2020, as well as the chief scientific adviser for Wales’ Spearhead Science Wales initiative, from its existing £15 million allocation.

This second phase of the Sêr Cymru programme is intended to expand Welsh research capacity in specific areas of national importance, the letter says, with clinical medicine and engineering highlighted.
