Kirsty Williams is to remain in charge of education in the Cabinet being formed by the new Welsh first minister Mark Drakeford.

Williams, a Liberal Democrat assembly member for Brecon and Radnorshire, was first appointed Cabinet secretary for education in May 2016 and reappointed in November 2017. Her portfolio includes higher education, medical education and schools.

The Welsh Cabinet was announced by Drakeford on 13 December, a day after his role was confirmed in a Welsh assembly vote. Before joining the Welsh government as minister for health in 2013, Drakeford worked as a professor of social policy and applied social sciences at Cardiff University. He is a member of the Labour Party.
