Immigration changes designed to help international academics

Changes to Home Office immigration rules will allow some international academics in the UK to be absent for 180 days without prejudicing their application to stay permanently.

The new rule is expected to help academics who travel regularly for research as it covers holders of Tier 2 visas. According to a Home Office statement, their absence from the UK must be “for a reason that is consistent with the migrant’s purpose of stay in the UK or for serious or compelling reasons”.
