Clegg abandons plans for Lords reforms

Deputy prime minister Nick Clegg has confirmed that the government has dropped a bill that would have introduced elected peers to the House of Lords.

Tory backbenchers and Labour MPs failed to back the bill in a vote last month, meaning it did not have majority support in the House of Commons.
