‘First step’ in improved immigration support

Universities will soon have a dedicated point of contact at the UK Border Agency, a move they welcomed as a “first step in enhanced support”.

A dedicated account manager is among several other changes being piloted. The scheme also includes training events for universities on topics such as compliance, and the ability to check quickly whether a student is eligible to come to the UK.

A Universities UK spokeswoman said, “We look forward to the conclusions of the pilot and hope that this development will be the first step in enhanced support for institutions and greater understanding between UKBA and universities.”

Damian Green, immigration minister, said, “We have listened to feedback from the sector and acted, which is why we are bringing forward these improvements. At the same time we are committed to radically reforming the student visa system to weed out abuse and protect the UK from those looking to play the system.”
