Greenhouse gas calculator tipped for prize

The online 2050 calculator developed at the UK's Department of Energy and Climate Change to provide better evidence for shaping decisions on energy policy has been nominated for an award.

The open-source tool was designed by the department’s chief scientist and civil servants to help policymakers and the public understand how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining energy supply. It is nominated for the Analysis and Use of Evidence Award in the Civil Service Awards 2013, which are run by the Cabinet Office and political-information company Dods.

The calculator has been promoted overseas and China has been “persuaded” to produce its own version, the nomination documents say.
