David Cameron pledges to double funding for dementia research

Prime Minister David Cameron has announced a number of initiatives to boost dementia research, along with a pledge to double public, commercial and charitable R&D in the area by 2025.

The announcement, made on 11 December, follows a government commitment to increase funding from £50 million in 2012-13 to £66m in 2015.

Cameron made the announcement at the G8 dementia summit, where he also announced that the Medical Research Council will invest £150 million into clinical research. A third of this will be spent on new treatments for dementia, a condition that affects 800,000 people in the UK and 44m people worldwide.
