Innovation should be top of agenda in autumn statement, says think tank

The Big Innovation Centre think tank has written an open letter to the Chancellor George Osborne ahead of his autumn statement on the economy.

The letter calls on the government to do more to encourage collaboration between businesses and universities. “To further promote home-grown and international investment in UK innovation, the government could use initiatives such as the Regional Growth Fund to match private investment in areas where it has not been forthcoming,” reads the letter, published on 3 December.

The autumn statement, which is to be delivered on 5 December, is the second most important economic statement, after the budget. It is the chancellor’s time to update MPs and the public on the government’s taxation and spending plans.
