George Osborne has been warned to protect spending on science, innovation and capital investment, following his announcement that seven government departments have agreed to budget cuts of between 8 and 10 per cent.
Luke Georghiou, director of policy research at the University of Manchester’s Business School, says he thinks it is “likely that the government will impose comparable cuts on remaining departments including the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills—perhaps 8 per cent” in the run-up to next month’s spending review.
However he warns that BIS’s budgets for research, teaching and innovation “are the main engine for future economic growth and recovery”.
