Health agency wants unified approval process in 2014

A single application and approval system for health research could be launched next year, says the Health Research Authority.

The HRA board has approved the business case for buying an integrated application and approval system and its procurement is underway. The authority’s business plan 2013-14, published on 3 May, states that implementation “will depend on plans agreed with approved suppliers and will be announced later in the year [but that it] is anticipated to be in mid-2014”.

The business plan also reveals the HRA’s plans to re-write the Research Governance Framework in late 2014. This will be informed by at least two reviews to take place this year, one on risks in research and another on the role of the NHS in research. The HRA also intends to complete an exercise in identifying its ‘values’ in the third quarter of 12013.
