Representatives of medical research organisations, the pharmaceutical industry, MPs and peers have called for continued support for science ahead of the next government spending review.
The call was made in an open letter to The Times published on 15 May. Signatories include Paul Nurse, chief executive of the Francis Crick Institute; Harpal Kumar, chief executive of Cancer Research UK; Julian Huppert, Liberal Democrat MP for Cambridge; and Patrick Vallance, president of pharmaceuticals R&D at GlaxoSmithKline.
“With only 4 per cent of the world’s scientists, the UK is responsible for 14 of the top 100 medicines in use today (second only to the US). As Venki Ramakrishnan eloquently argued last week (Opinion, May 8) we must maintain this position by keeping pace with our competitors,” the letter says.
