Stronger international partnerships are needed to tackle the worldwide threat of antimicrobial resistance, UK health secretary Jeremy Hunt and chief medical officer Sally Davies have warned.
They made the comments in a 20 May statement issued ahead of their appearance at the World Health Assembly in Geneva.
Davies said the UK was taking the issue “extremely seriously and will be publishing a five-year, cross-government strategy in the summer”. This strategy would include ways to slow down development and spread of resistance, maintaining the efficacy of existing antimicrobials and supporting the development of new drugs and alternative treatments.
