Academics recognised in New Year’s honours list

Several high-profile academics have been awarded knighthoods, CBEs and OBEs in this year's honours list alongside two vice-chancellors.

Five academics have been given knighthoods, including: Adrian Bird, the Buchanan professor of genetics at the University of Edinburgh; Richard Blundell, professor of economics at University College London and director of the Economic and Social Research Council’s Centre for the Microeconomic Analysis of Public Policy; and Geoffrey Palmer, who is the professor of life sciences at Heriot-Watt University, in Edinburgh.

Richard Buckley who project managed the archaeological dig to uncover the remains of Richard III will receive an OBE (order of the British Empire) as will several other professors.
