IP offices test quicker patent registration

The UK Intellectual Property Office has announced that it is one of 17 national IP offices that will jointly test a system to speed up the time it takes to prosecute, or register, a patent.

The seventeen offices are taking part in a pilot of the Global Patent Prosecution Highway. The shared policy means that an applicant whose claims about their application have been found acceptable by one IP office can ask other IP offices to heed the same claims, thereby speeding up the total time it takes all offices to register the patent.

The other countries taking part in the pilot include Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea and the United States.
