Government acts to make ships greener

Innovate UK is planning to hold a competition for research to improve energy efficiency aboard ships in 2015.

The UK innovation agency formerly known as the Technology Strategy Board has announced it will invest up to £7.5 million in projects to improve maritime energy management. It will focus in particular on the technological challenges affecting the production, management and use of energy on vessels.

Applications must be collaborative and business-led, and those involving micro and small businesses would be favoured. The agency intends to fund up to 60 per cent of total costs from £500,000 to £1.5m.
