Institutions applying to the government’s £200-million capital fund for teaching infrastructure for STEM subjects will be expected to show evidence that they are committed to broadening access for underrepresented groups.
Under plans published by the Higher Education Funding Council for England on 28 February, institutions will need to submit fresh documents outlining their plans for diversity on top of their existing statements on the subject.
The government announced its intention to create the fund in September 2013, with science and universities minister David Willetts saying that access to the fund would be conditional on applicants’ diversity plans. Willetts said in November 2013 that the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills was to advise HEFCE on further links between university funding and gender diversity plans.
