Universities and small businesses anchor economic growth, finds report

The Higher Education Funding Council for England has published a report into the role of universities in the economy and society that claims a sixfold return on knowledge exchange investment.

The report, by University of Cambridge researcher Tomas Coates Ulrichsen, claims that for every £1 of knowledge exchange funding granted to universities from HEFCE from 2003 to 2012, £6.30 has been earned in gross additional income. It adds that universities are ‘anchors’ of the economy and society.

Announcing the publication of the report on 3 April, HEFCE said in a statement that it "intends to build on the analysis with further investigation of higher education’s role in growth, particularly in relation to small and medium-sized enterprises”.
