Helm reappointed as Natural Capital Committee chairman

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has confirmed that economics professor Dieter Helm will remain chairman of the Natural Capital Committee.

The committee advises the government on the sustainable use of natural assets and was established by the coalition government in 2012. It has made a number of recommendations to government, including that a 25-year plan be developed for the UK’s natural economy and to incorporate natural capital into the national accounts by 2020.

In September, the government confirmed that the committee would have its life extended after its initial phase concluded on 30 September. However, at the time of the announcement, Helm told Research Fortnight that he was largely in the dark about the details of the committee’s future terms of reference.
