Former civil servant appointed chairman of innovative medicines review

Hugh Taylor is to lead the Innovative Medicines and Medical Technology Review which will consider how to speed up the implementation of medical innovations in the UK.

Taylor, who is a former secretary of state at the Department of Health, will be supported in his role by an advisory group led by John Bell, regius professor of medicine at Oxford University.

The terms of reference for the review have also been provided. They state that the three areas which will be considered for reform are: how innovative medicines might be more quickly assessed for efficacy and safety; how reimbursement for their development might be adapted to encourage that work; and how uptake of new medicines and technologies might be encouraged across the NHS.
