Government picks potential sites for UK spaceport

Four sites in Scotland and one each in England and Wales have been shortlisted as potential UK bases for commercial space flights.

The six sites are the Campbeltown, Glasgow Prestwick and Stornoway airports in Scotland, Newquay airport in England and Llanbedr airfield in Wales. The sixth, RAF Leuchars in Scotland, has been suggested as a temporary facility.

The sites were selected following a consultation conducted by the Department for Transport in 2014. The department had asked interested parties to comment on operational, safety, meteorological, environmental and economic criteria for a potential spaceport and a site longlist drawn up by the Civil Aviation Authority.
