The National Physical Laboratory has announced that David Grant has been selected to serve as its next chairman.

Grant has been serving as interim chief executive officer at Innovate UK, formerly the Technology Strategy Board, since January, having been a member of its governing board between 2007 and 2014. On 12 March it was announced that Ruth McKernan would take over the Innovate UK role permanently from 1 May, with Grant stepping down on 30 April.

Grant is also chairman of Stemnet, the science, technology, engineering and mathematics network, and a non-executive director of the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory. He served as vice-chancellor of Cardiff University from 2001 to 2012 and vice-president of the Royal Academy of Engineering from 2007 to 2012.
