Defra promises farmers increase in capital spending

Environment secretary Liz Truss has said that her department will increase its capital spending by 12 per cent over the next five years.

Over the course of this parliament, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs will increase its capital budget to £2.7 billion, Truss told the Oxford Farming Conference on 6 January.

The money will be used for investment in animal and plant disease responses, as well as to improve flood defences and carry out other modernisations within the department’s technology and digital systems, she said.
