Johnson confirms Newton Fund will expand

Science and universities minister Jo Johnson has confirmed that the Newton Fund’s budget will be doubled and its life will be extended to 2021.

Giving the Campaign for Science and Engineering’s annual lecture at the Royal Institution on 27 January, Johnson confirmed that the fund would increase its spending from £75 million a year to £150m a year by 2021.

The increase, first reported by Research Fortnight on 13 January, will see the total amount of funding in the scheme reach £735m, rather than the initial plan of £375m.
