The Department for International Development has confirmed that it will continue to spend 3 per cent of its budget on research and says its overseas aid efforts will aim to focus on research and innovation.
On 26 October international development secretary Priti Patel launched the first DFID research review at the Global Challenges Conference in London, hosted by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Patel restated DFID’s commitment to investing 3 per cent of its budget “in high-quality, high-impact research”.
The department will also invest £357 million through the Ross Fund for research on infectious diseases during the spending review period. Combined, this amounts to spending an average of £390m a year over the next four years on development research, she said.
