Regional science audits ‘lacking in hard data’

Critics of the government’s first Science and Innovation Audits have said that they are unlikely to provide usable information to guide regional investment.

Announced by former chancellor George Osborne in July 2015, the audits were intended to build a comprehensive map of the UK’s science and innovation strengths that could be referenced when deciding where to invest.

However, a lack of clarity about the purpose of the audits and difficulties in obtaining uniform data mean that the audits may not be as useful as hoped.
