Shale gas fracking will undermine the UK's ability to achieve its 2050 climate change target unless the industry is strictly regulated, according to a report by a government advisory committee.
The Committee on Climate Change report, produced in March, was published by the Department of Energy and Climate Change on 7 July alongside the UK government’s response.
The committee, a statutory body set up to advise ministers on greenhouse gas levels at five-yearly intervals, concluded that the exploitation of shale gas on a significant scale was not compatible with UK climate targets unless three tests were met.
