An independent body will be created to oversee the adoption of the industrial strategy, the UK government has announced. But a leading academic who has pushed for just such a body has already voiced concerns over whether it will have the teeth to do its job effectively.
The industrial strategy white paper published on 27 November includes major pledges on research funding. It also says that an Industrial Strategy Council, modelled on the fiscal watchdog the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), is being created to assess its success.
Council members will be a mix of business representatives, investors, economists and academics from across the UK. They will be given access to government data and have funding to commission specific evaluation projects.
