The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency will collaborate with the World Health Organization to improve the safety monitoring of medicines in low and middle-income countries.
The MHRA will receive £980,000 from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to monitor the efficacy of newly-introduced medicines and vaccines for diseases such as malaria and HIV, the government announced on 15 December.
The agency will join Project Smart Safety Surveillance, launched by the Gates foundation and the WHO. The initiative aims to help poorer countries identify and manage the risks associated with new products. The partnership will last three years.
