Medical charities call for more NHS research

The Association of Medical Research Charities has called on the next UK government to promote research in the NHS and to encourage more patients to take part in studies.

The AMRC, which represents 140 medical charities including the Wellcome Trust, Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation, published a list of demands for political leaders ahead of the general election on 8 June.

The association said that only 28 per cent of NHS patients were informed about the possibility of participating in research studies, including clinical trials. This breaches the NHS’s constitution, which promises to inform patients about research studies that they may be eligible for, the AMRC said on 4 May.
