The UK will maintain close ties with Euratom during the Brexit transition while it prepares to operate as “an independent and responsible nuclear state” after its departure from the European Union, the business secretary Greg Clark has said.
In a written statement published on 11 January, Clark said the government intended to maintain “continuity with current relevant Euratom arrangements” to secure the UK’s leading role in European nuclear research. Clark pledged to publish quarterly reports on the business department’s progress on this.
To achieve continuity the government will seek close association with Euratom’s Research and Training Programme, including the Joint European Torus and Iter, the global project to build a new fusion reactor, according to the statement.
