Government appoints chief geography adviser

David Wood, a civil servant working on the administration of England and Wales courts, has been appointed head of geography for government scientists and engineers.

Wood, who for the last two years has served as deputy director of HM Courts and Tribunal Service, will implement the UK’s Government Science and Engineering Strategy by championing the contribution of geographers. Wood graduated in economics and geography from Queen Mary College, University of London, in the nineties, and holds a masters in economics from the University of Surrey.

The announcement, made on 4 January, is a boon for the social sciences as the position of pan-government head of geography is a new creation, and will give researchers in the field a greater stake in influencing government policy.
