Whitty takes up chief medical officer role

   

Disease specialist takes over from Sally Davies, who led UK’s Ebola crisis response

Epidemiologist Chris Whitty has been welcomed into his post as chief medical officer for England and chief medical adviser to the UK government. The former chief scientific adviser for the Department of Health and Social Care took up the role on 1 October.

Whitty served as interim government chief scientific adviser from 2017 to 2018. During his time working as a clinician across Africa and Asia, his research focused on the spread of infectious diseases, particularly malaria.
