Culture minister wants wider and more timely definition of treasures to protect more artefacts

The UK government has announced plans to redefine what counts as archaeological treasure under the 1996 Treasure Act in a bid to protect more finds that fall outside the current definition.

A specialist research project announced on 3 December will inform the new definition, said the culture department, adding that there will also be opportunities for detectorists, archaeologists, museums, academics and curators to contribute to the effort.
