BEIS cuts ODA R&D as it boosts climate spending, data confirm

Balance between aid spending on R&D and climate work at business department reverses

Figures published by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy confirm that savage cuts to research funded by the international aid budget have come at the same time as increases in climate-related spending.

In total, BEIS will spend £187 million in official development assistance on R&D in 2021-22, which is largely accounted for by major funding pots such as the Global Challenges Research Fund and the Newton Fund.
