Universities cautiously welcome ‘sensible’ Stern review

Universities and research managers have praised Nicholas Stern’s “considerate” review of the Research Excellence Framework, but expressed concern about whether the recommendations will actually reduce the workload.

Stern’s review of the REF was published by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy on 28 July.

The review proposed that all research-active staff should be submitted to the REF, ending the practice of staff selection. To counteract the extra work that this will cause, the review also suggested that there should be more flexibility in the number of outputs each researcher will be required to submit.
