Cancer test developed at accelerator facility

Researchers led by the University of Liverpool have developed a diagnostic test for oesophageal cancer using an infrared free electron laser at the ALICE accelerator, situated at the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s Daresbury Laboratory in Cheshire.

The infrared light was used to image tissue obtained by endoscopy from patients with a precursor condition to oesophageal cancer. The test was developed by using the images to spot changes in the samples.
