The Natural Environment Research Council has said an article in The Independent on 8 April was incorrect in reporting that the British Antarctic Survey faces cuts of more than 25 per cent.
NERC said in a statement that the article is “misinformed” and that the council decided about four weeks ago, subject to ratification by the council, to provide the £42-million-a-year institute with a flat cash settlement through to 2015. A spokeswoman told Research Fortnight Today that this would not translate into 25 per cent cuts but to nine per cent when taking into account the Treasury’s estimated rate of inflation over the period of the Spending Review.
