Former IBM chief to chair NERC

Anthony Cleaver has been appointed chairman of the Natural Environment Research Council.

Cleaver, who described himself recently as a “serial chairman”, led the privatisation of the UK Atomic Energy Authority during his time as chairman in the 1990s. He is also the former chairman and chief executive of consultancy and software business IBM.

Speaking at a pre-appointment hearing in front of the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee in October, Cleaver said that sometimes a research council chairman must make tough decisions in the interests of the council, the parent government department and the country. “You can’t always carry everybody with you. It’s fatal to believe that,” he said.
