Biological imaging added at UK synchrotron

The UK synchrotron facility Diamond Light Source is going to host a cryo-electron microscope imaging centre.

The facility is to be funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, the Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council. The funders are together contributing £15.6 million to the centre.

The microscopes “will enable more and higher quality science—we expect it to be a big stimulus to structural and cellular biology in the UK and Europe,” said Helen Saibil, professor of structural biology at Birkbeck, University of London. “Many crystallographers and cell biologists express an interest in these methods but don’t have access to the required facilities and expertise—the centre will provide training and technical support.”
