The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council has awarded grants worth £3.27 million for work on carbon capture and storage.
The work will study the geological viability and safety of storing carbon underground in depleted North Sea oil and gas fields or saline aquifers.
The grants go to the British Geological Survey, Cardiff University, Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Imperial College London, the National Oceanography Centre, and the Universities of Edinburgh, Leeds and Manchester. Industrial partners on the projects include energy company Shell.
