The Medical Research Council and the National Institute for Health Research have opened a phenome research centre based at Imperial College London, with each funder contributing £5 million.
The centre expects to examine around 100,000 blood and urine samples every year. Researchers will analyse phenomes, which are the biological results of genes and environment, to determine the causes of disease and to tailor treatments.
The centre is a collaboration between Imperial, King’s College London, and instrument companies the Waters Corporation and Bruker Biospin. The centre’s director is Jeremy Nicholson, a professor of biological chemistry and head of Imperial’s Department of Surgery and Cancer.
