Alick Ashmore, who was involved in the development of many of the UK’s research facilities in the 1960s and 1970s, has died at the age of 93.
Ashmore was director of the Daresbury Laboratory from 1970 to 1981.
“In securing funding for both the Nuclear Structure Facility and the Synchrotron Radiation Source, Ashmore led the transformation of Daresbury from a high-energy physics laboratory to an international centre for nuclear physics and synchrotron radiation,” said Susan Smith, head of the STFC Daresbury Laboratory.
