The leaders of cohort studies should interact more with policymakers and medical practitioners to help inform evidence-based policies, according to a review by the Medical Research Council.
A total of 2.2 million people in the UK, or 3.5 per cent of the population, were taking part in a cohort study when the review was carried out. The review notes that such participants "have given consent for their personal data to be linked to NHS records and other data sources such as education and the census".
The findings were detailed in a report, Maximising the Value of UK Population Cohorts: MRC strategic review of the largest UK population cohort studies, published on 21 March.
