NERC acts to boost regional impact of environmental research

The Natural Environment Research Council has launched a £5-million call for a five-year programme to translate environmental science into practice in the UK’s regions.

The Environmental Science Impact Programme will encourage research organisations to work with businesses and policymakers in their area to generate economic and societal benefits, NERC said in an announcement on 16 December.

This could include using NERC-funded research to address challenges that affect a particular region, such as protecting roads, buildings and other infrastructure from environmental risks such as extreme weather and flooding. It could also include managing rivers, lakes and other water resources sustainably or increasing a region’s expertise in a growing industry, such as marine robotics.
