NERC looks to catch industry with sustainable seafood call

The Natural Environment Research Council and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council have announced a £6-million initiative to help the UK develop a sustainable fish-farming industry.

The aquaculture industry has the potential to reduce pressure on wild fisheries, NERC said in a statement on 9 December. However this cannot happen until there is a better understanding of the biology and health of farmed fish, as well as the effects of aquaculture on the environment.

The councils said that the UK Aquaculture Initiative aims to address this, and will encourage close engagement between academics and industry by funding early-stage collaborative projects in research areas that companies are not yet competing in.
