Significant hurdles remain for academic clinicians, says MRC

A Medical Research Council review into the experiences of early-career clinical academics has said that there are still many obstacles hampering career progression.

A Cross-Funder Review of Early-Career Clinical Academics: Enablers and barriers to progression was published on 9 December and looks at how applicants to clinical-research training fellowships became interested in research, their career paths and asks what barriers they faced in becoming clinical academics.

The review surveyed more than 400 clinicians who had applied for clinical research training fellowships from the MRC, the Academy of Medical Sciences, the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, the National Institute for Health Research and the Wellcome Trust. Both successful and unsuccessful applicants were surveyed.
