The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council has reviewed its mathematical biology portfolio and found that researchers are concerned about lack of ownership of interdisciplinary research and want cross-council arrangements to be more open.
Researchers are concerned that research at the interface of the mathematical and life sciences does not have a single “home” within the research councils, the EPSRC says. Cross-council arrangements allowing the councils to jointly fund such research are “not usually visible” to researchers, the council adds.
The EPSRC Review of Mathematical Biology Summary, published on 16 February, says that those researchers who took part in the review expressed concern that dialogue between the research councils is not transparent. It “often takes place behind the scenes and is not visible,” the report says.
